Um….No

30 Jun

I don’t know what to say.  It’s like the 80s had a baby with itself in this apartment…

image via brown harris stevens

Chintzy sofas, ottomans that look oddly like those terrible parachute pants, pastel colors and yes…that is a mirrored ceiling.  Goodness.

This 1 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom Classic 6 (never got having more baths than beds, but whatevs) is yours for the low price of $2.495 mil.  I’m guessing it’ll cost about half that to hire a decorator who can remove all traces of every 80s decor trend in the apartment.

House Tour: Turn-of-the-Century Duplex

29 Jun

It’s happened, I’ve ‘discovered’ another one of those Scandinavian home styling websites; you know the drill, they style a home in a ridiculously chic manner to sell it.  Everything looks straight from the pages of Skona Hem.  At any rate, this website is Alvhem Makleri & Interior, and they’ve got some cute houses styled (although a couple are bordering on Ikea catalog).

However, this one is an older duplex and I’m sure it’s been sold already.  You can put your checkbooks back…  It’s a cute little turn-of-the-20th-century space that was renovated and turned into a duplex.

The home’s spiral staircase led to a downstairs artists’ studio and bedroom.

This is one of the better home-styled-for-sale spaces that I’ve seen in a while.  While it’s obviously been styled, the personality of the home’s owner comes through and it looks more homey and less catalogue-y.

Hmmm…

… this living room. Well, not the living room so much as the wall, with its arcade wall featuring Galaga.  This is the L.A. House by Studio Guilherme Torres.

Design Notebook: George Nelson Bubble Lamps

27 Jun

I’ve always really liked George Nelson’s Bubble Lamps; they’re cute, and simultaneously retro and modern.  The Bubble Lamps (today’s feature) were all designed in 1947 for Howard Miller, and like many of the mid-century modern pieces I’ve featured in Design Notebook, Nelson incorporated a material that initially was used in the military.

image via hive modern

This self-webbing plastic was easy to produce, and as you can see, the result was very similar to a paper lantern, made with a more durable material than…paper.  The lamps also emit a lovely, warm, and even light.  Moreover, these lamps were all sold at affordable prices for the time, $14.75-$90.

Nelson once told a story of rushing to a sale of silk-covered lamps that he’d had his eye for some time, only to find out there was one left for $125.  Thus began his inspiration for the Bubble Lamps, effectively thumbing his nose, ‘Eff that, I’ll make my own lamps!’  That’s pretty much what he did throughout 1947.

Design Inspiration: Art Wall

24 Jun

Inspired by Twitter convo yesterday on adding color into your home, I’m posting a few of my favorite inspirational art walls.  Since art is a great way to introduce color into your home, an art wall takes that a step further and allows you to play with different, not to mention contrasting, colors, pattern and scale.

You could frame a grouping of solid colored paintings as in this living room.

In this Tampa home styled by Nate Berkus, the color palette is mostly softly toned browns, chocolate, gray and tan with a bit of navy here and there.  But a single painting in bright, sunflower-yellow adds a refreshing pop of color to this great room.  The painting is by José María Yturralde.

And what an ingenious idea this is:  framed vintage Vogue covers in this apartment styled by Jonathan Adler for Liz Lange in Domino Magazine (RIP).

Finally, you could go for an oversized vintage poster to add some color and intrigue to a blah room.

So, what are your thoughts?  Do any of you have art walls?

Shopping with Rex Kelly: Dining Chairs

23 Jun

Following up on last week’s post on Shopping with Rex Kelly: Dining Tables, Part Deux, today we’re going shopping for dining room chairs.  While most of the tables we found did have having chairs, I kind of think it’s a bit boring  and quotidian.

On that note, let’s go shopping!

marais a chair

The classic cafe chair, perfect for those who want an industrial-chic chair that looks beautiful on their patios and their U-boats.  The chair was designed in 1934 by metalworker Xavier Pauchard, whose talent with metal and design produced this lovely galvanized steel chair.

It’s available in lots of colors and in a perforated design as well, would look great in an indoor/outdoor kitchen or on the patio.

Available at Design within Reach in Mint, Plum, White or Gunmetal Grey.  $250

moller arm chair 55

If you’re a fan of Danish Modern furniture, especially those who worked with wood like Hans Wegner  and Jens Risom, you might enjoy the work of this designer as well.  His name’s Niels Otto Moller and he designed this side chair in 1944.  The full collection of arm chairs, side chairs and benches was just acquired last year by Design within Reach for production, so hopefully we’ll be seeing more of these beautiful chairs in the months of years to come.

Available at Design within Reach in Teak for $970.

emeco us navy chair

I just featured the Emeco US Navy Chair in this week’s Design Notebook, but I wanted to list it here, because it really is a classically-beautiful cafe chair.  It’s also great for U-Boats…just sayin.

Replicas available at Rex Kelly in Brushed Aluminum $159

hans wegner wishbone chair

If there’s an iconic mid-century modern dining chair, Hans Wegner’s Wishbone Chair would definitely be a contender.

Original colors in Beech, Ash, Oak, and black lacquered Oak available at Hive Modern, from $750.

The colorful chairs that were released in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Wishbone design are available at Room & Board in 12 different colors $855.

Replicas available in Beech at Rex Kelly $189.

eames molded dining chair- dcm

I mention Eames all the time here, but I haven’t talked much about this particular chair, although it’s one of my favorite versions of Eames’ molded dining chairs.  This one is the molded wood the wire base.

It’s a classic choice for dining room chairs and it’s easy to see why…

Happy Shopping, All!

What I Love…

22 Jun

….this artwork and me, sounding it out, confused, “ass, “ass,” “in”?  Oh…”assassin.”

Anyway, this is the dining room of Tracy and Nick Lehman, which appeared in this month’s issue of Architectural Digest.

House Tour: Mid-Century Modernism in Madrid

21 Jun

Yeah…say that five times fast.

This house tour is heavy on books, color, mid-century modern furniture and contemporary design.  I love that the house is essentially a glass parallelogram topped off with a bright orange lid.

an exterior view

the foyer

What look like domed pendant lamps are actually skylights!  And I just love the Paulin’s Orange Slice Chair in …orange.

the living room

A mix of side chairs and a cross-legged wood slab table completes this dining room, while a couple of pendant lamps hang in the balance.

the dining room

Homemade couches line the walls while Eames LAR and a Rinsom Chair are used for extra seating.  The fireplace is by Selgascano.

the other side of the living room

An exterior shot of the bedroom reveals that the parts of the house are below ground-level.

the bedroom

Orange floors….this fellow likes orange.  I think.

the bedroom

The color palette, it would seem to me, is a play on primary colors; red, blue, yellow…and orange for good effect.  All in all, it’s a very playful, comfortable home, which is something you don’t often see in glass houses.

Appeared in the Sept/Oct. 2010 issue of Inside Out Magazine

Design Notebook: Emeco US Navy Chair

20 Jun

Simple, yes, but this Aluminum chair designed by Emeco in 1944 for the US Navy (hence the name) is one bad-ass-shut-yo-mouth.  It was designed for use on wartime submarines and aircraft carriers, and because it’s crafted from thermal-treated aluminum, it’s lightweight and corrosion-resistant.  It’s also said to last roughly….150 years.

image via emeco

Thankfully, due to it’s classic design, it looks as good on a U-boat as it does in your mid-century modern or contemporary dining room.  Just take a look…

The great thing about these chairs is that they’re also perfect for naked sitting!
