House Tour: Mid-Century Modern Heaven in Meyerhofer Residence

12 Jul

Osborn Architects, based in Glendale, CA, did a complete renovation of this home’s structure and surrounding landscape.  The result is a warm, inviting home with glass walls offering different views of the landscape.

Here’s the dining room, with spectacular views of the garden.  The set includes a warm, wooden table and a Model 48 dining chairs by Finn Juhl.  The space is complemented by a set of Poul Henninsgsen Artichoke Lamps.  I kind of like how they’re separated by the steel beams…

dining room

What I love most about the home is that it’s so modern in its mix of materials — stone counter tops, glass walls, wood wall panels, tile and marble floors — as well its eclectic mix of mid-century modern and contemporary pieces.

But enough about that, let’s look at the pretty pictures, shall we?

A William Platner Lounge Chair and Ottoman + Arco Lamp are accented by Ikat floor pillows and a huge area rug.  The stone fireplace is amazing.  I want.  I have to say that for all the stone and concrete in this house, it’s really quite inviting.

sitting area

A Serge Mouille 3-Arm Standing Lamp is always a winner.  I’m not really crazy about animal print (I do make exceptions for cowhide), but I don’t hate this zebra ottoman.

Love the accents of gold lighting here in the foyer.

What’s also interesting about this home is how modular the spaces are.  Normally I find that to be very boring, but when you have shag rugs, flotsam wood accent pieces, warm lighting and subtly mixed prints/patterns, it gives these spaces a lot more personality.

See what I mean by modular?

So what do you all think of this home?  I love it!

House Tour: Kuaotunu Beach House

29 Jun

Here’s another beautiful house in Coromandel, New Zealand by the architects Crosson, Clarke and Carnacha.  I previously covered one of their homes in my post on Mid-Century Modern Beachside.  This design firm has some truly amazing projects, and I would cover them all, but I particularly like their Kuaotunu Beach House.

patio

I mean come on, this is per-FEC-tion.  This holiday home is giving off a modern, yet relaxed, Hamptons vibe.  I love it: the openness of the home, the multiple rooms that each open up to the patio, the seclusion and the view.  The materials and color palette both reflect the home’s surroundings and add to the modern beach cottage aesthetic.

These look like the Modern Floater Chaise by Manuel Kretzer and Mathias Bernhard, but I’m not 100% certain.  Either way, I love a modern floating chaise!

patio

Let’s talk about this den that opens up onto the patio:  What I really like, besides the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, is the incorporation of beachy materials.  The oars hung as wall art, and grassy green area rugs are lovely.

den

From this view you can see how expansive this home is.

den

This view is something else.  And because the walls are made of glass, the homeowners have variants of this spectacular view from every room!

You can check out more pictures of this amazing house, here. Oh, and they have a book, “Ten Houses.”  Great gift if you like coffee table books of gorgeous homes in faraway lands.  Ahem…

House Tour: Une Appartement de Rue de Rivoli

29 May

My French is tres mal, but today’s house tour is a Paris apartment — the best kind, really — on Rue de Rivoli designed and renovated by Isabelle Stanislas and Leiko Oshima.  The interior design + architecture duo goes by the name of So-An.  If this project is any hint, you should know they specialize in that rare mix of Parisian chic with vintage + 19th century French style in nothing but Haussmman apartments.

view of the grand staircase

Huge windows complement the bright-white walls framed by black velvet drapes.  I never thought I’d approve of charcoal velvet, let alone charcoal velvet drapes, but they add to the grandeur of this apartment, don’t they?  The apartment’s color palette has a modern, graphic aesthetic to it: white walls, bright light, contrast with dark colors like black, charcoal gray and deep plum.

living room

Love this dining table constructed from salvaged wood.  Organic pieces like this give the apartment a more down-to-earth feeling that I can appreciate.

eat-in kitchen

These lights in the hallway are too cool!

stairway to heaven (I mean the bedroom)

I love any space with a Serge Mouille light fixture.  You’ll see yet another piece constructed of salvaged wood.  It really complements the dark-stained and herringbone wood floors.

This apartment is my idea of a Parisian home.  What do you guys think?

House Tour: An Understated, Retro Flat

22 May

Today we’re touring a gorgeous flat with a decidedly retro feel to it.  This space is retro in its throwback color palette of yellow and brown (so 70s), which of course could backfire in a horrid mess.  But the openness and interior architecture of the space itself, along with a few vintage and modern pieces save it from that ubiquitous fate.

Let’s talk about these amazing windows: everyone should have floor-to-ceiling windows like these.   They provide the best kind of lighting — ambient, sunny and sunny — and they class up any interior style.  The windows soften the retro feel, here, complete with heavy mustard curtains, a well-worn greige settee and an Arne Jacobsen Floor Lamp in white.

living room

Love a photo ledge!  And of course no living room is complete without a cowhide rug…

living room

I’ll admit, I’m not crazy about any fabric screen, let alone this yellow floral one, but it does provide a nice accent to what was probably an empty corner.  Perhaps something in a complementary color would have worked better?  The lamp is by Poul Henningsen.

dining area

I do love the use of vintage cabinets in this dining area, but…storing shoes where you eat is just weird, right?  It’s weird.

1950s-ish chrome kitchen storage… love the *obviously* vintage teak bowls!

Mini House Tour: Erika Brechtel’s Mod Glam SoCal Home

30 Mar

Today’s mini house tour comes c/o of Erika Brechtel, of Small Shop Studio, whose home was featured in last month’s issue of The Glitter Guide.  I say ‘mini’ house tour because there are so many pictures over at The Glitter Guide.

I know, after seeing so many ugly spaces in the past few weeks in my “Um….No,” series, you need a break.  It’s refreshing to see that some people do in fact have design sense, an eye for color and a sense of style.  She’s got a modern + glamorous + Hollywood Regency aesthetic here that I think is really great.

Take for instance this perfect vignette in her living room.  A white Barcelona Chair and marble Saarinen Tulip Side Table are complimented by a black-and-white cow skin box.  You know how much I like cow skins, something about them lends itself well to mid-century modern design.

the living room

Do you remember how those brass tables were big in the 70s/80s?  Well this one is actually by modern designer Jonathan Adler, but it reminds me of those brass cocktail tables from so long ago.  Brechtel’s got a few other brass pieces around her home, many of which are vintage pieces.

vintage brass table

The entire living room, in fact, is given a modern update with a gray modular sofa.

the living room

Love her little makeshift bar section, too.  She’s got a thing for brass and gold accents, I think.

the bar

dining room + gold tone settings

The home office has some really bright accents — pink and orange — that are toned down with the use of walls painted in gray.  And here we see more brass accents:  another brass mushroom lamp and a brass etagere.

House Tour: An Attic in the North

20 Mar

Today’s House Tour blog post is courtesy of my personal stand-by for amazing houses: Nuevo Estilo.

the terrace

Look at that view!  Located in Madrid, and designed by Mikel Irastorza, this home is literally the perfect mix of neo-classical, mid-century modern and contemporary.  Combine that with a beautiful location, mountain views, some great light fixtures, and well… “I want to go to there.”

The resident, Alfonso de Icaza is also an avid collector, so while there’s a lot stuff, it’s not bordering on ‘Hoarders’ territory, if you know what I mean.  Take a look at this gorgeous living room for instance.  There are quite a few pieces in here – ceramics, vases, display pieces — but it’s not too much.

the living room

Another shot reveals a pair of breige (brown beige) sofas, a gray rug, gray tables and a pair of Jens Risom Lounge Chairs.

the living room

I really like the dining room too.  It’s a modern glass table with French neo-classical dining chairs and modular wood shelving units that act as a room divider.  The color palette of gray and silver, against the wood paneled floors looks really fresh here.  Those cool ceiling lamps are by Aqua Creations.

the dining room

Homes like these always have impossibly fancy kitchens.

fancy kitchen

Despite the wealth of grey, silver and breige, they’re certainly not afraid of color, or prints for that matter, as they’ve saved all that goodness for the bedroom.

colorful, luxe bedroom

Outside the bedroom is more terrace with gorgeous lounge chairs by Patricia Urquiola Kettal, and endless glasses of wine (one can hope).

So what do you think of this house?  It’s perfect right?

House Tour: A casa di Teresa

6 Mar

Well I’m not fluent (or semi) in Italian, but I’m pretty sure this home belongs to a nice lady named Teresa Sapey.

This fabulous apartment at The Plaza in Manhattan has a rather storied past; namely that though it’s beautifully designed, she barely, if ever lived in it.  (She bought it in July 2007, then it was back on the market later that year, 45% below original asking price, OUCH!)  Anyway, the apartment was eventually sold in 2010, and let’s just hope that the new owner doesn’t muck it up in something worthy of a litany of “Um….No” posts.

So here’s what the apartment used to look like.  It reads like she sort of picked everything out of a catalogue, but I have a feeling that if she had bothered to live in the apartment for awhile, then it’d look much more homey.  But it’s got some great pieces.

An Eames La Chaise, Barcelona Chairs, Arco Floor Lamp and a C.Jere Sculpture + herringbone wood floors.  What’s not to love?

living room

the living room

Now, see, I want to like the dining room, perhaps if this was a wooden table and not this white one.  I do LOVE this lamp though.

the dining room

An Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair makes for good bedside seating, yes?

the bedroom

So, what do you think?  I’m not in love with it, but I don’t hate it either.

House Tour: A 19th Century Schoolhouse in PA

1 Mar

I thought it would be a lovely change to do a house tour of an old, stodgy 19th school turned house in stodgy Milford, PA.

via Dwell

Oh, how looks can be so deceiving!

the living room

Did I just blow your mind?  Good.  So the story is that these two New York photographers — Richard Renaldi and Seth Boyd – decided to move into the Milford Academy, an actual 19th century school, in Milford, PA, and they paired with their two architect friends — Andrew Magnes and Koray Duman – and remade the interior into something so deliciously modern and fun that I had to show you!

House Tour: Upside Down in Morocco

24 Feb

No, you did not read that incorrectly, nor did I misstype (though that happens sometimes).

From the latest issue of Marie Claire Maison, is this upside down house in Morocco, built by Jean-Francois Fourtou.

The house itself is literally upside down…

House Tour: An Amsterdam Canal House

16 Feb

Today’s House Tour is c/o of Inrichting Huis.  Now, I don’t speak Danish but I can tell you this is a great Dutch blog about cute, yet modern and ecelctic Dutch, et. al., houses.

This particular home of Dawn & Henry — a concept designer and denim designer, respectively — is a perfect mix of mid-century modern and contemporary styles… and denim.

design butchers

Dawn and Henry are both people who love to reuse old, vintage and even found objects.  I love these stage lights that are used throughout the house, too.

see? lots of denim...

hallway

So, they have two refrigerators in their kitchen; one, to actually refrigerate foods and another that Dawn found in an old slaughterhouse that they use to store their pots and pans.  They modeled the decor/design of the kitchen after this particular fridge.

Love the simplicity of the living room, with an Eames Lounge Chair.
