Modern Classics Redux: The Bertoia Side Chair Outdoors

8 Jun

“The One Where I Make the Case for Bertoia Outdoors.”

Bertoia’s Side Chair gets a new look when it’s used in an outdoor, garden, porch or patio setting.  Wire chairs are, of course, perfect for outdoors; they’re durable, weather proof — for the most part — and they’re still incredibly chic.  On that note, enjoy this round-up of Bertoia Chairs Outdoors and then lament the fact that you hadn’t thought of this ingenious idea sooner.

White Bertoia Side Chairs look super chic when paired with a chunky wooden table in this cute lakehouse setting.

On this covered patio in Hawaii — jealous already — a set of black Bertoia side chairs and a Noguchi Cyclone Table fit right in with this modern abode.  The Davis/Hall House is one of many in Hawaii built by the team of architects at Craig Steely Architecture.

I’m beginning to notice a trend:  white Bertoia Side Chairs and chunky, vintage wood tables…

In this Granada-Hills based Eichler Home, Cindy Epping decorates the atrium with a little garden table and a pair of white Bertoia Side Chairs.

I’m thinking it would be really easy to add some pops of color, by upholstering some pillows in a punchy weather proof fabric.  But it seems a lot of people prefer the monochromatic look.  I see much more colorful fabrics used with Diamond Chair for some reason.

Modern Classics: PK9 Side Chair

25 Apr

The PK9 Side Chair, one of the newest additions to my Modern Classics Collection, has funny legs.  And — interestingly enough — the chair’s seating is inspired by the designer’s wife.

image via artibazar.com

Let me explain…

The designer, Poul Kjaerholm, noted that after seeing the imprint of his wife’s behind left in the sand one day at the beach, it occurred to him to have his wife press her behind into clay molds, to aid Poul in perfecting the shape of his chair designs.

The PK9 Side Chair is notable not only for its sandy cheeks-inspired design, but also for its unique stainless steel three-branch pedestal.  That’s why this chair is sometimes referred to as the “Tulip Chair.”  Its pedestal resembles the bell-shaped curve of a tulip, much like Eero Saarinen’s Tulip Chair and Tulip Table.

The PK9 Side Chair has a fresh modern air to it.  It has a dynamic, yet comfortable shape and would fit in perfectly in with many types of decorative styles.  From a minimalist home to neo-traditional apartment, it will definitely look great anywhere!

Modern Classics: Achille Castiglioni Taraxacum 88 Light Pendant

16 Apr

Goodness!  That’s a mouthful, isn’t it?

repilica taraxacum 88 light pendant

No matter.  This multi-faceted light pendant, inspired by the taxaracum (common name:  dandelion) is one of my favorite lighting pieces (Aside from the Arco Lamp and the Taccia Table Lamp that is.)

Designed in 1988 by Achille and Pier Castiglioni for Flos, this pendant is an exercise in dynamic lighting.  The core of the Taraxacum pendant is fashioned from 20 polished aluminium triangles, and supports 60 light bulbs, which combine to create the unique look of this piece.

One of the great things about this particular piece is that it pairs extremely well with many design styles: mid-century modern, of course, but also neo-traditional, minimalist, etc.  Whatever the style, the Taraxacum 88 Light Pendant gives an air of modernity that you don’t see with too many other light pendants.

Take for instance, this modern, color-blocked kitchen.

Would you guess that a cool flat like this would be in stuffy Notting Hill?  This eccentric flat, via Domus Nova, features white Panton S Chairs, a Taraxacum 88 Light Pendant and a lavender sectional and it all works so well together!

Here’s the Tarazacum 88 Light Pendant shown in a minimalist dining area with Arne Jacobsen Series 7 Chairs and table.

And finally, in this modern rustic house, the Taraxacum looks chic and modern with a chunky wooden table w/ metal legs, and Eames Wire Chairs.

Modern Classics: Hans Wegner Shell Chair

3 Apr

Also referred to as CH 07, the Hans Wagner Shell Chair is the newest addition to my shop and the newest addition to my Modern Classics  selection, over at rexkelly.com.

hans wegner shell chair

This three-legged beauty was designed in 1963.  When it was first introduced, it didn’t sell well and production ceased after a few years.  But in 1997, renewed interest in the chair led to re-production, and well, here we are.

This chair is perfect for lounging; it’s frame crafted from form-pressed plywood, with real wood veneer, in addition to foam-cushioned seat pads upholstered in gorgeous Italian leather.

In addition to loungin’ around, the chair works as an accent chair, side chair  (in the bedroom), and even in twos, threes and more.

Here’s the CH07 in Ty Pennigton’s home…

Modern Classics: The Model B3 Chair

3 Jan

The Model B3 Chair?  What?

image via alki1 (flickr)

The Wassily Chair, sillies.  Marcel Breuer designed this chair in 1925-26 while he was head of the Bauhaus movement.  And what’s so fantastic about this chair is that it’s design was based on the steel tubing of Breueur’s Adler bicycle.

What was revolutionary about this chair is that it used both steel tubing and canvas, which were great materials at the time.

You know it’s really interesting to see how war-time efforts (World Wars I and II and the time span between) effected furniture and product design.

Anywho, what resulted, was this sexy lounge chair.  And let’s be frank, the Wassily Chair’s design  nearly 90 years later is still so fresh and modern-looking.

image via apartment therapy

Here it’s shown in a fairly traditionally-designed bedroom.  It adds just the right touch of modernity.

image via my design dump

I just love the hominess and color in this home, which you can take a look at here.  In the background is a Charles IV Chest, and an envy-inducing library.

image via inspiracion online

It works really well even in ultra-eclectic interiors.  Here’s a vintage Wassily Chair topped with a colorful pillow, with a greek-key mirror in the background, and a teal wooden console.

In this South African home, that needs to be mine, a pair of white Wassily Chairs are probably the most normal pieces here.  Love them nonetheless…

Love the Wassily Chair and want one, need one (or two) for your own home.  Rexkelly.com now carries a true-to-form reproduction of this chair.

Our reproduction features a stainless-steel tubular frame and a plush cowhide.  Retails for only $899.

Modern Classics: The Jens Risom Lounge Chair

27 Dec

This is it.  It’s the final Modern Classics for 2011.  (Can’t believe I’ve been doing this for over a year!!).  Today’s addition to the Modern Classics selection at RexKelly.com is the Jens Risom Lounge Chair.

image via hive modern

The Risom Lounge Chair was a part of a collection designed in 1941for Knoll and is highly characteristics of Danish Modern Design: it’s minimalist, elegant and wooden.  It’s a great chair for any room — the children’s room, in the bedroom or living room as an accent chair — or as a set in the den.

This entire apartment in the East Village is like a museum of mid-century modern design.  Among the Eames Plywood Chairs, the George Nelsom clock and bench, among others, is the Risom Lounge Chair, upholstered in alternating colors of tan and cognac leather.  Love it!

Modern Classics: The Eames La Chaise

19 Dec

Another Monday, another Modern Classics addition.  Today it’s the Eames La Chaise, an exquisite chair designed by the dynamic design duo of Ray + Charles Eames in 1948 for MoMA’s International Competition for Low Cost Furniture Design.

It was inspired by Gaston Lachaise’s Floating Figure, a zaftig bronze sculpture that he designed in 1927:

gaston lachaise, floating figure, 1927

It’s a midcentury modern with echoes of 18th and 19th century chaise lounges and as its name suggests, it’s perfect for lounging, zaftig-ly.

Here it is at the Citizen M Hotel in Glasgow in a hallway of Eames Elephants.  This is one of those rare micentury modern pieces that has a sculptural quality to it (perhaps because it was inspired by a sculpture).

And it works in any room, your living room, bedroom.  Here it’s shown in a walk-in closet.

Perhaps you’ll want something comfortable and chic to lounge in for the new year?  You’re in luck, I’ve got gorgeous replicas of the Eames La Chaise in stock (duh!).

My high-quality replicas are composed of a molded fiberglass shell on a solid hardwood base with stainless steel frame.

Modern Classics: Eames + Saarinen Organic Chair

12 Dec

They say that great minds think alike and that two heads are better than one; no where is that more true than Charles Eames’ and Eero Saarinen’s collaboration to create their Organic Chair.  This dynamic design duo originally designed the Organic Chair in 1940 for the “Organic Design in Home Furnishing” competition held by the MoMA, and of course they won.  But, mass production of the chair didn’t begin until about 1950 due to high cost of production (especially during war efforts of the early 1940s).

Now it’s part of my Modern Classics collection, because of its ingenious design; it is meant to mimic the body’s natural seated position and of course it’s nice to look at.

Modern Classics: The Papa Bear Chair

5 Dec

Hans Wegner’s The Papa Bear Chair is the ultimate in luxury lounge seating.

image via mod restoration

Formerly known as the Teddy Bear Chair, Hans Wegner designed this chair for AP Furniture in 1951.  Said to evoke the animal kingdom with its playful and organic aesthetics, the Papa Bear Chair is perfect for lounging in, napping in, relaxing in.  I mean…it practically gives you a bear hug (the friendly kind) from behind.

image via domino mag (RIP)

What’s really great about this chair is its stylistic dexterity.  It’s lines are Danish Modern: sleek, long and organic.  But it’s design is classic.  Another reason everyone loves this chair is that’s beautiful from all angles, as Wegner designed it to be.

“A chair is to have no backside. It should be beautiful from all sides and angles.”

image via desire to inspire

image via emmas blogg

As I’ve said before, the Papa Bear Chair is suited for even the most luxe/traditional of settings.  That’s the case in this traditional grand library with columnal pillars and glossy herringbone wood floors.

In this luxurious living room with a decorative boat-shaped chandelier, bone-inlaid Moroccan stool and a teal leather Moroccan pouf, a Papa Bear Chair upholstered in orange velvet only adds to the luxe setting, doesn’t it?

Modern Classics: Arne Jacobsen Table Lamp

28 Nov

Just in time for the Cyber Monday and Holiday shopping seasons, let’s all give a warm golf clap to the Arne Jacobsen Table Lamp.  It’s one of the newest additions to my shop at rexkelly.com.

This is really one of the most beautiful table lamps you’re going to come across, not to mention one of the most uniquely shaped.  The AJ Table Lamp was designed for the SAS Royal Copenhagen in 1957, as was pretty much everything else in the time period of 1956-1960.  In fact, he designed the entire hotel, from the chairs -Egg and Swan- to these lamps, right down to the cutlery.

What makes this lamp different, of course, is its unique conically-shaped head.  That and the fact, that the base was originally intended to accommodate ashtrays.  Today, though, it’s another one of it’s unique design aspects.

The AJ Table Lamp fits right in amidst  the eclectic mix of midcentury modern furniture, magazines and flea market finds of illustrator Lisa Grue’s home.

The gorgeous replicas that are now available in my shop, are true to the original design, with a tiltable fixture head that has a distinct asymmetrical head, allowing you to focus the softly diffused light anywhere on your desk.

Available in black, it comes with a cast iron stand, steel tube and a spun shade.  It’d make a great gift at only $299!
