What I Love…

12 Jun

… Freshome’s compilation of interiors featuring the Eames Lounge Chair.

And I especially love this space shown below.  A beach house is probably the last place you’d expect to see an Eames Lounge Chair, but here it is in all its glory.  I also love the fact that though this space is modern — cement ceilings + glass walls, anyone — it’s also warm and receptive and contains some beachy elements like the pebbles and the jute rug.

It’s perfection!

Modern Classics Redux: The Bertoia Side Chair Outdoors

8 Jun

“The One Where I Make the Case for Bertoia Outdoors.”

Bertoia’s Side Chair gets a new look when it’s used in an outdoor, garden, porch or patio setting.  Wire chairs are, of course, perfect for outdoors; they’re durable, weather proof — for the most part — and they’re still incredibly chic.  On that note, enjoy this round-up of Bertoia Chairs Outdoors and then lament the fact that you hadn’t thought of this ingenious idea sooner.

White Bertoia Side Chairs look super chic when paired with a chunky wooden table in this cute lakehouse setting.

On this covered patio in Hawaii — jealous already — a set of black Bertoia side chairs and a Noguchi Cyclone Table fit right in with this modern abode.  The Davis/Hall House is one of many in Hawaii built by the team of architects at Craig Steely Architecture.

I’m beginning to notice a trend:  white Bertoia Side Chairs and chunky, vintage wood tables…

In this Granada-Hills based Eichler Home, Cindy Epping decorates the atrium with a little garden table and a pair of white Bertoia Side Chairs.

I’m thinking it would be really easy to add some pops of color, by upholstering some pillows in a punchy weather proof fabric.  But it seems a lot of people prefer the monochromatic look.  I see much more colorful fabrics used with Diamond Chair for some reason.

Ask Rex Launches!

3 May

As one of the many resident ‘experts’ in mid-century modern design and decor, I like to think I have an eye for designing around mid-century modern pieces.

I’m totally kidding, guys!

This new topic actually came about because a reader had a question on decorating with a few pieces centered around a contemporary sofa from Room & Board.  Someone actually values my opinion.  Hard to believe, I know!

Anyhoo, I thought I’d share my suggestions for with the rest of my dear readers because I’m sure many of you have the same sort of questions about decorating with and around MCM pieces.  So… here it goes!

A reader asks:

“I have the following sectional, and I was looking for two accent chairs to go along with the sectional [sic].  I was thinking something along the lines of the a womb chair and a shell chair in black. Do you have any suggestions for 2 chairs to compliment this look?”

The sectional in question, is the Chelsea Sectional from Room & Board, and he has an accompanying ottoman (not shown here).

Chelsea Sectional

Sounds like he wants an accent chair and an accompanying lounge chair.  Cool.

We’re out of black Eames shell chairs at the moment, sad face.  But it you were to go with the white shell chair and a Saarinen Womb Chair in Ivory or Oatmeal, I think that would be too much white/neutral going on, unless you’re into that.  I also don’t think the Saarinen Womb Chair looks right with this sectional.

Option #1

Replica Eero Saarinen Womb Chair and Ottoman in White $849

Replica Eames DAR Armchair in White $109

Yes, I like Eames and I am always and forever talking about Eames.  But in this case, I think the Eames Lounge Chair is a better fit for this modular sectional.

Option #2

Chelsea Modular Sectional

Replica Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman in Black Leather $849

Replica Eames DSR Side Chair in White $99

So, I’d love to hear your questions (and perhaps, suggestions) for the future “Ask Rex” column.

What I Love…

29 Mar

…seeing mid-century modern pieces in the most interesting and unexpecting places.

Take this Italian villa, for instance; it’s the picture of idyllic sanctuary.  It’s surrounded by hills of olive trees, flowers fruits and sunflower fields.  It’s really a beautiful villa, very sparingly decorated.

Yet they obviously had good sense to pair a chunky wood dining table with a set of white Panton S Dining Chairs.  I think they look quite perfect here, what do you think?

Design Notebook: Green

14 Mar

Don’t Kiss Me…I’m Irish.

Except for St. Patrick’s Day, green furniture and home decor accessories rarely get any love.  So in today’s Design Notebook, we’re going to take a look at just how versatile green can be.

Back in the olden days of the 50 and 60s, maybe into the early 70s, mid-century modern color palettes often incorporated a pale green that today looks kitschy and too retro for my tastes.  But these days, green is much more bold and saturated in a wider range of tints and shades, ranging from celery to Chartreuse to hunter and unique green (Google it).  This gives the color a much more modern appeal and makes it easier to use with other colors.

Let’s take a look-see, shall we?

Here’s Tim Marlow chillaxing in a green leather Arne Jacobsen Swan Chair:

“Be Inspired” is right.  A set of celery green Eames DSR Side Chairs makes for a fun and child-friendly crafts room!

Likewise, a set of four “luck o’ the Irish” green Series 7 Chairs by Arne Jacobsen chairs with an Ikea Docksta table (I’m guessing), makes for a great dining area and adds some much-needed bright color in this mostly white apartment!

In this corner vignette, a Chartreuse Saarinen Womb Chair and a tall vase of lilies make for a perfect spot to relax the day away.  I really like the very subtle use of green here, too.

And remember earlier last year when Carl Hansen & Son released a colorful series of the CH24 Chair (that’s the Hans Wegner Wishbone Chair to you noobs)?  In the green series, you’ll find citrus grey, citrus, sea green and green, as seen in this modern Scandinavian apartment.

Luckily, green isn’t confined to furniture, but can be incorporated into your general home decor, through a bunch of pillows, an accent wall, or some other decorative accessory.

In this home office, white accessories/shelving, and a white Panton S Chair are complemented by a lime green accent wall.

Finn Juhl had the jump on green decades ago, and painted an accent wall in his home the color of split-pea soup.  It works.

Finally, green glass and ceramics is a beautiful way to add this color to your home.  As long you’re not clumsy, that is…

So what do you all think about green? Do you use it in your home?  Will you?  Won’t you?  I’d love to know!

House Tour: An Attic Apartment in Paris

7 Feb

No matter how bad (or good) the apartment, it always sounds a bit more tolerable and chic when it’s in Paris.  Such is the case with this tiny, but stylish attic apartment in Paris.

Formerly a service space, the owners broke down many of the walls, created a sliding partition in the living room and used a white and gray color palette with some bright colors here and there to create a feeling of openness and spaciousness.

You can see that this apartment is longer than it is wide.  I kind of like these weird windows, don’t you?  It’s a small space, sure, but the slightly sloped roof and the placement of the windows creates a more dynamic feeling than you’d find in small, box studios.

This compact sofa in taupe is by Antonio Citterio. I bet you’ll never guess who made the chairs…

The workspace, and the living room pictured above, are where the owners exercised a bit more creativity in their decor.  More seating was created by building a banquet onto the wall.

So what do you guys think about this Parisian apartment?

Modern Classics: The Jens Risom Lounge Chair

27 Dec

This is it.  It’s the final Modern Classics for 2011.  (Can’t believe I’ve been doing this for over a year!!).  Today’s addition to the Modern Classics selection at RexKelly.com is the Jens Risom Lounge Chair.

image via hive modern

The Risom Lounge Chair was a part of a collection designed in 1941for Knoll and is highly characteristics of Danish Modern Design: it’s minimalist, elegant and wooden.  It’s a great chair for any room — the children’s room, in the bedroom or living room as an accent chair — or as a set in the den.

This entire apartment in the East Village is like a museum of mid-century modern design.  Among the Eames Plywood Chairs, the George Nelsom clock and bench, among others, is the Risom Lounge Chair, upholstered in alternating colors of tan and cognac leather.  Love it!

Modern Classics: The Eames La Chaise

19 Dec

Another Monday, another Modern Classics addition.  Today it’s the Eames La Chaise, an exquisite chair designed by the dynamic design duo of Ray + Charles Eames in 1948 for MoMA’s International Competition for Low Cost Furniture Design.

It was inspired by Gaston Lachaise’s Floating Figure, a zaftig bronze sculpture that he designed in 1927:

gaston lachaise, floating figure, 1927

It’s a midcentury modern with echoes of 18th and 19th century chaise lounges and as its name suggests, it’s perfect for lounging, zaftig-ly.

Here it is at the Citizen M Hotel in Glasgow in a hallway of Eames Elephants.  This is one of those rare micentury modern pieces that has a sculptural quality to it (perhaps because it was inspired by a sculpture).

And it works in any room, your living room, bedroom.  Here it’s shown in a walk-in closet.

Perhaps you’ll want something comfortable and chic to lounge in for the new year?  You’re in luck, I’ve got gorgeous replicas of the Eames La Chaise in stock (duh!).

My high-quality replicas are composed of a molded fiberglass shell on a solid hardwood base with stainless steel frame.

The replica Eames La Chaise retails for only $1,389 (compare to $9475).

Modern Classics: Eames + Saarinen Organic Chair

12 Dec

They say that great minds think alike and that two heads are better than one; no where is that more true than Charles Eames’ and Eero Saarinen’s collaboration to create their Organic Chair.  This dynamic design duo originally designed the Organic Chair in 1940 for the “Organic Design in Home Furnishing” competition held by the MoMA, and of course they won.  But, mass production of the chair didn’t begin until about 1950 due to high cost of production (especially during war efforts of the early 1940s).

Now it’s part of my Modern Classics collection, because of its ingenious design; it is meant to mimic the body’s natural seated position and of course it’s nice to look at.

Here, the Eames + Saarinen Organic Chair is paired with a black marble Saarinen Tulip Table at the Kinky House.  The chair is great here for occasional use or for lounging about.
